1996年，一场百年不遇的洪灾冲垮了绿岗村农民养家保命的几百亩山地，乡亲们看着满目疮痍的家园失声痛哭。河北农大教授李保国随科技扶贫组来到村里，乡亲们绝望的泪水刺痛了他，他决心扎根绿岗，指导果农改良苹果品种。在此之前，李保国曾在太行山深处的南川峪为小流域治理付出了十几年心血，直到把那里变成“太行山最绿的地方”。在绿岗，初来乍到的李保国穿着打扮和长相比农民还土气，并不被认可，他的科技主张也屡遭果农抵制，朴实的李教授最终用行动和成果打动和感化了乡亲们，绿岗苹果也成为享誉世界的品牌。科技改变了土生土长的农民们的命运，而李保国却在收获成果的季节倒在了他的岗位上。
影片根据浅田政志拍摄写真集改编。 二宫和也与妻夫木聪将在影片中饰演兄弟，影片以四口之家中的次子(二宫和也饰)的视角展现浅田一家的生活。
